It was the last day of his freshman year at college when Butch Sands received the bad news about his father. James Sands was found floating face down in the mangroves on Pedro Island, near the Southwest Florida coastline. The authorities claim it was a fishing accident. But Butch isn’t convinced. His gut tells him that James, a journalist, was murdered due to a recent story involving illegal labor practices in Miami; Butch has no idea of the dangers he must face to find the truth. Those closest to him insist that the matter be closed—especially when Butch’s accusations focus on a popular and powerful local businessman and philanthropist. As Butch searches for answers, an unexpected hurricane leads him to newfound romance and a chance encounter with a fifth generation fisherman seeking a similar truth ignored by island residents for years. As fortunes change, Butch is forced to make a decision that will change his life forever.

New author Jonathan Herbert really does know how to tell a story. At the center of his new thriller, Banyan Street is a resourceful and gutsy college freshman-- Butch Sands. We are hurled right into the action, when Butch is yanked out of his final exam to hear the devastating news that his father is dead. Worse still, a fishing guide found his lifeless Dad, James Sands floating face down in the mangroves on Pedro Island, off the Southwest coast of Florida. The authorities claim it was a fishing accident--a self-inflicted gaff hook wound led to his falling overboard and drowning--before the hammerheads..."
Butch's suspicions run rampant as to who would want his father dead; yet both his mother and brother fight his misgivings as he struggles on his own to figure out how to find the answers. And that's when the uncomplicated, yet ever-twisting plot begins to take shape. At his core, Butch believes his dad, a well-known journalist, was murdered because of a story he was investigating involving illegal labor practices in Miami.
Butch relocates to Pedro Island to investigate on his own.
As the book's hero, Butch is smart and tough, yet sensitive and vulnerable. Although he has no idea of the dangers he must face to find the truth, he takes them head-on as a rookie journalist for the local island paper.
Herbert gets high marks for building believable characters--the reluctantly-compassionate brother Kevin, the island drunks (every island has a few), the crazy newspaper boss, the smart bartender, the romantic girlfriend Hailey, and a kind soul--a fifth generation fisherman seeking a similar truth ignored by island residents for years.
But the main attraction is the popular and powerful local businessman and philanthropist.
Banyan Street also brings color and clarity to an island setting. The intense hurricane midway through the book brings a new dimension to the story, and strengthens the ties between the characters. At the same time, it creates a subtle study in human strength and compassion vs. money and power.
As the end gets near and we think we know, there are still surprises. If you like an action-packed thriller laced with a tropical setting and fun characters, then don't miss out on this one.

Banyan Street Jonathan Herbert 9781440188145 Books Reviews
I don't read a great deal for pleasure, but I could not put this book down. I literally finished it the day after it arrived (while catching some flack from my wife for ignoring my children). Herbert does a good job describing the surroundings, especially the storm and its aftermath. The character back stories are well laid out while leaving the reader thirsting for more. I am looking forward to the next installment.
I used to live in the area Jonathan Herbert's book is based, so it brought back fond memories. More importantly, the book was a total page turner. I could not put it down. Great story, interesting characters. I hope to read more of Mr. Herbert's stuff in the future. I do not actually read a lot of fiction, I prefer non-fiction, so it takes a lot to keep my interest. This was great. Mark King
Loved it! Just perfect for guys like me who love Florida Fiction! I Highly recommend this book! Very well written!
As the saying goes, great things do come in small packages. This is definitely the case with "Banyan Street". I just love this type of writing style. You really feel like you are there, smelling the ocean air and feeling the tropical breezes. As others stated, I could not put the book down either. I stayed up until 130 on a work night finishing the book as the suspense continued to build. Sure, I paid for it the next day, but it was well worth it.
I was interested in reading this because I live in the area and am very familiar with it. This is a fairly new author, but I have to compare it to established authors, and in that, it is sorely lacking.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, which is filled with great imagery that makes you feel like you're truly there in Florida.
Good character development, and I feel like I know Butch a little better now.
I don't know what this Alicia Crews is talking about, but I thought the plot was well-developed and the intensity was great.
I don't want to give anything away, but I cannot wait for the next Butch Sands novel to come out.
Way to go, Jon!
I enjoyed Author Herbert's story set in Southwest Florida. The descriptions of the people and the area ring true --- a place full of eclectic personalities living with high humidity and other oppressive forces --- in other words A sunny place for shady people.
